Scattering Ashes at Goodison Park: Options for Everton Fans

For generations of Evertonians, Goodison Park was where Saturdays happened. Even with the club now playing at its new home on the waterfront, many families want a loved one's ashes to rest close to the Old Lady. This guide explains the options.

Can you scatter ashes at Goodison Park?

Ashes can't be scattered on the pitch or inside the ground. A football ground is private land, and in the UK you need the landowner's permission to scatter ashes on private land, so never scatter ashes at a ground without agreement.

The St Luke's Church remembrance garden

Right beside Goodison Park, on the corner behind the Gwladys Street End, stands St Luke the Evangelist, Walton. The church has a remembrance garden where the ashes of parishioners and Everton supporters from all over the world are laid to rest, following Church of England custom and practice. Plaques remember those whose ashes are placed there.

The garden is open on request, so contact the parish directly to ask about placing ashes, plaques, fees and visiting. The church is also home to the Everton FC Heritage Society, and it has been part of Goodison matchdays for more than a century.

What about Hill Dickinson Stadium?

Everton moved from Goodison Park to Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock after the 2024/25 season. We're not aware of any arrangement for scattering ashes at the new stadium. If you'd like to ask, contact the club's supporter services before making plans.

Other places to scatter ashes

  • Council gardens of remembrance. Liverpool City Council's crematoria have gardens where ashes can be scattered by arrangement. See the council's page on cremated remains.
  • Stanley Park, between Goodison and Anfield, is run by the council. Ask Liverpool City Council before scattering in a public park.
  • Somewhere that meant something to them, such as their seat's view of the Mersey, the pub before the match, or their old Sunday league pitch, with the landowner's permission.

Keeping them close to the club

Many families keep their loved one at home in something that looks like them. Our Everton football urn is hand-crafted from a genuine football in Everton colours, with a sealed inner chamber that holds about 3.8 litres, enough for the full ashes of most adults. You can add an engraved display stand and a display case.

Some families do both: they lay a small portion of ashes to rest at St Luke's and keep the rest at home in the urn.
